Course Exercise

I want to do a project for my human geography class in which my students build their own compass and create their own maps. I want to get suggestions for how to approach this project and what supplies I will need. I want to bring human geography to life and get students interacting with maps. Please provide any suggestions or ideas that you might have concerning this project.

  1. This sounds like a great idea. You can use the simple instructions on how to make a compass found on wikihow:
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Compass. They use everyday inexpensive items that all of the kids can find at home or that would be easy to find. And the site provides pictures and videos, so it can be very engaging.

  2. You will definitely need to have students get familiar with maps, so I would provide students with maps of the following: cities, mountains, oceans, islands, and whole contenents. Even then, maps differ when it comes to what they show, including types of terrain, topography, elevation, street and city information.

    1. You make a good point; I need to teach my students how to read maps and what information can be extracted from them.
